STREET PHOTOGRAPHY
“Street photography is one of the classic photography genres, but it isn’t for everyone. Photographers like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Vivian Maier and Helen Levitt were true artists with their unique styles capturing images of everyday people in their natural environment. My personal favourite has always been Elliot Erwitt who produced superb black & white images of candid and frequently humorous situations within everyday life.
Today, this genre is no less of a challenge and in many ways more so. Speaking with people in the street either before or after you have gone ‘click’ is often confrontational; many photographers will shy away from this or just go with a candid approach.
However, the law is quite specific in the area of photography, but often confused or misunderstood. In basic terms you can photograph anyone or anywhere without permission as long as it is in a public space. Obviously, care should be taken if photographing minors.”
