“Landscape photography requires time spent behind the camera and not in post processing. Many of us take landscape photographs as we travel about on a day-to-day basis. For convenience most will use a mobile phone camera as it is quick to hand and simple to use. However, the biggest issue with phone cameras are their over reliance on automatic post processing, utilizing many different digital filters that users are completely unaware of. Certainly, they can produce extremely good photographs and that is fine for most people.

But… if you have ever wanted to improve your photography and claim the whole process from composition, exposure and final image presentation, there is one simple premise: put your phone away, take time and use a tripod mounted camera.

Very few, if any, of my landscape images in my portfolio are ‘snaps’. In other words, I reject almost all landscape photos I take handheld because I haven’t taken the time to appreciate the scene or the lighting and take advantage of my years of experience in producing a correct exposure.

Whether I’m using medium format film (Fujichrome Velvia 50 ISO being my favourite) in a Bronica SQAi or shooting my Nikon digital gear, I prefer to utilise graduated neutral density filters to balance exposure. Waiting for the right light or a cloud to move, is a test of patience, which can make all the difference. In other words, I am a nightmare to travel with as my family and friends will testify to.“
